Position Summary

OnPoint NYC is seeking a Physician to provide culturally competent clinical care, deeply rooted in a harm reduction framework, to OnPoint NYC program participants. Areas of focus include expanding participants’ access to medication assisted treatment (MAT), specifically access to buprenorphine; HCV and HIV care; sexual health care; taper, substitution therapy and withdrawal support; general health assessments and related referrals; mental health assessments and related referrals; basic primary health care and related referrals; referrals to psychedelic therapies as appropriate. The Physician will also maintain relationships with and refer participants to trusted neighboring health clinics.

Hours Per Week: 16/hours weekly, two 8-hour shifts weekly
Schedule: Monday – Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm

General Responsibilities
  • Conducts all clinical services and interactions with participants using a patient-centered approach and from a harm reduction framework
  • Increases access to and engagement in integrated treatment modalities for comorbid mental health conditions among people who use drugs
  • Prescribes medications to participants in need of medication assistance
  • Assesses patient health by interviewing patients; performing physical examinations; obtaining, updating, and studying medical histories
  • Prepares diagnostic reports and reviews them
  • Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records; documentation is timely and of an audit worthy standard
  • Designs individualized care plans, using a variety of treatments
  • Assures delivery of quality care services to all participants in a respectful and professional manner
  • Instructs and counsels patients by describing an array of possible therapeutic regimens, providing counseling, and promoting wellness and health maintenance
  • Provides continuity of care by developing and implementing patient management plans
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing and maintaining personal networks; participating in professional societies
  • Is well versed in and committed to providing low threshold, comprehensive drug user healthcare. This care will include culturally competent addiction and risk reduction treatment modalities such as MOUD, while acknowledging participants right to have has their broader medical and wellness needs addressed.
 
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
  • Holds current license to practice medicine in New York State
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in a relevant specialty (Primary Care, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine)
  • Minimum three years of experience working in community health with marginalized populations preferred, including HIV positive individuals, people who use drugs, unstably housed individuals, sex workers or formerly incarcerated individuals
  • Holds valid New York State DEA Prescriber number
  • Holds valid New York State Medical Cannabis prescribing license (preferred but not required)
  • Ability to collaborate and engage with staff at all levels – must exercise sound judgement
  • A desire to work tactically and strategically – possessing a hands-on approach when required
  • Highly organized, proactive, solutions-focused, with excellent follow through
  • Interest in working in a non-judgmental environment, where sex workers and drug users have a voice in the creation of programs and policies designed to serve them
  • Maintains respect and compassion for all clients being served, regardless of their active drug use or treatment compliance
  • Commitment to harm reduction and social justice principles as it pertains to individuals who use drugs or engage in sex work in a multi-cultural, multi-racial environment, in a non-judgmental way
  • Carries own malpractice and necessary insurance coverage
  • BLS certification required
  • Spanish fluency an asset but not required.
