Outreach & Public Safety

Serving the community means being out in the community. It also means meeting people and seeing them for who they are.

Our Outreach and Public Safety Teams (OPST) serve individuals in East Harlem, Washington Heights, and the Bronx, connecting them with our comprehensive programs. We distribute food, clothing, safer drug use supplies, and educational materials, while also addressing syringe litter and other hazardous waste. Our OPST meet people and sees them for who they are by conducting outreach with compassion and care.

In addition to these services, we actively table at community events and provide Narcan training to both community members and other community-based organizations (CBOs). As ambassadors for our organization, OPST strives to create a vital bridge between the community and our services. We educate residents on harm reduction, overdose intervention, and other essential resources. Our OPST also maintains the Public Safety Hotline for community members to request syringe litter clean-up and assistance in reducing public use. Through these efforts, we foster a safer, more informed community.

Community Kiosks

The kiosk initiative is a collaborative effort between Parks Department, the Department of Health, and OnPoint NYC, aimed at addressing public health concerns related to substance use. This initiative involves the installation of syringe drop boxes (or kiosks) in high-impact areas across Manhattan and the Bronx, specifically in public spaces with a known history of drug use. These strategically placed drop boxes are designed to provide a safe and accessible way for individuals to dispose of used syringes, helping to reduce the risk of needle-related injuries and the spread of infectious diseases. By placing these disposal units in high-need areas, the initiative seeks to improve community health outcomes, enhance public safety, and promote harm reduction efforts. It also emphasizes the importance of creating a more supportive and understanding environment for people who use drugs while ensuring the cleanliness and safety of public spaces.

They also receive ongoing support from our Outreach and Public Safety Team that regularly services these kiosks. The team ensures that the drop boxes are consistently maintained and emptied to guarantee their effectiveness and safety. By conducting routine visits, the team helps ensure that the kiosks remain operational and accessible for those who need them. The outreach aspect of this effort also extends beyond the kiosks themselves, as team members engage with the community to provide information about harm reduction, offer support to individuals who may need services, and foster trust between OnPoint as a provider and the rest of the community. This proactive approach aims to create a safer environment in high-impact areas while providing essential resources for those affected by substance use.
