Staying Safe and Informed: The Importance of Regular HIV Testing

At OnPoint NYC, we prioritize the health and dignity of people who use drugs and engage in sex work, offering compassionate care without judgment. On National HIV Testing Day, we interviewed Synn Stern, our Health Clinic Nurse, to discuss the importance of regular HIV testing and how our services support the community.

Why is it important to get tested regularly for HIV?

Synn Stern: Getting tested regularly for HIV is vital for several reasons. First, it empowers individuals with knowledge about their health status. Early detection of HIV allows for timely treatment, which can significantly improve health outcomes and quality of life. Moreover, knowing your status helps in making informed decisions about your health and your partners’ safety. Regular testing is a proactive step in taking control of your health and reducing the spread of HIV within our community.

How does OnPoint NYC connect participants with testing and treatment?

Synn Stern: At OnPoint NYC, we make HIV testing accessible, confidential, and non-stigmatizing. Our Overdose Prevention Centers and HUB clinic offer free HIV testing onsite. We provide comprehensive support services, including counseling, sexual health education, and linkage to healthcare providers. Additionally, we offer PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) and PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) to help prevent HIV transmission.

We aim to create a supportive environment where everyone feels empowered to take charge of their health. Our clinics are staffed by clinicians from OnPoint and supported through our longstanding partnership with Montefiore Medical Center. This partnership supports clinical infrastructure and facilitates connections into the more extensive hospital system.

Why are people who use drugs at higher risk of contracting HIV, and what risk factors should they be aware of?

Synn Stern: People who use drugs face several factors that increase their chances of contracting HIV. Sharing needles and other injecting equipment can transmit the virus directly into the bloodstream. Additionally, the use of drugs can impair judgment, leading to behaviors such as unprotected sex. It’s essential to be aware of these risks and take preventive measures, such as using sterile needles, not sharing equipment, and using condoms. OnPoint NYC provides clean needles and safe injection supplies, along with education on safer drug use practices.

By focusing on harm reduction and sex positivity, we at OnPoint NYC strive to create a safer and healthier community. Regular HIV testing is critical to this effort, enabling us to support our participants in leading healthier lives. This National HIV Testing Day, remember that knowing your status is a decisive step towards protecting your health and the health of those around you.
